DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS CELEBRATE “FRANCOPHONIE” SEASON!

Twelve diplomatic missions represented in Tanzania, have jointly organised cultural and sport events to mark the 40th anniversary of the International Week of the “Francophonie” starting from March 17th to March 27th , 2010, as well as the International Day of Francophonie on the 20th of March, 2010.
56 member states of the International Organisation of Francophonie (OIF) and 14 observer members who share in the French language celebrate Francophonie worldwide with an objective of promoting French language within existing linguistic and cultural diversity.
Accredited Embassies of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Switzerland, France, Belgium, Vietnam, Rwanda, Canada, Burundi, as well as the Consulates of Djibouti, Seychelles and Comoro have organised various cultural events and lectures to celebrate the Francophonie from March 16th to March 27th , 2010 at various parts of Dar es Salaam and Arusha regions.
The opening ceremony is scheduled to be held at the residency of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium, H.E. Paul Jansen, to be followed by a painting and visual art exhibition by a Malagasy artist, Mr. Max Raveloson at Alliance Française de Dar es Salaam from March 20th to March 31st , 2010.
On March 22nd , 2010, Head of Cooperation of the French Embassy in Tanzania, Mr. Claude Poulet, is to deliver a key note lecture on: “Realities on Francophonie in 2010,” at the Alliance Française in Dar es Salaam.
Other events to mark Francophonie include music from French speaking countries in West Africa, Europe and America, movies, poets, football tournaments, volleyball, theatre plays and other games. A competition of French Language has been organised all over the country since February, gathering more than 1700 students contributions. A special dancing night “Dansez la francophonie” will alos take place on Friday the 26th at Sweet Easy.
Under an initiative of four former African heads of states made in 1970, namely Leopold Senghor of Senegal, Habib Borguiba of Tunisia, Hamad Dioro of Niger and Prince Sihanouk of Cambodia, 21 member states agreed on a convention establishing the ACCT
which eventually became the OIF in I988. OIF is the organisation of those who share French language, to say it in French “ Ceux qui ont le Français en partage”.
Today, French is either the first or second language to more than 200 million people worldwide, half of them living in the African continent and is an official language in most of international and regional organisations, including the African Union
