THIS WEEK ON M-NET'S STUDIO 53... NIGERIA, GHANA, SOUTH AFRICA, MOZAMBIQUE AND UGANDA

January 2009

DStv audiences are invited to Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Mozambique and Uganda this week as M-Net's STUDIO 53 makes stopovers at these destinations during the latest episode of the lifestyle program!

First stop is Lagos, Nigeria where AfricaMagic recently celebrated their fifth birthday. The gala evening kicked off with live entertainment and a 5 star meal. But everyone was here for the same reason, to celebrate the channel that celebrates the continent! The evening focused on celebrating all that AfricaMagic had achieved in five short years, and using that past success to ensure future growth. The evening also honored the people whose vision and contribution have made AfricaMagic a reality.

Then STUDIO53’s Anita is off to Ghana to chat to Tei Huagie about the booming textile business. Huagie graduated from the Ghanatta College of Arts and Design 15 years ago and since then he has been piecing together his own interpretation of textile art. When he’s not sewing metal, Tei turns his attention to making these ‘more wearable’ works of art. Also using fabric as her canvas and taking her inspiration from her daily life in Ghana is Batik artist Edwina Assan. Tune in as STUDIO 53’s Anita tell DStv viewers more about Textile art, that is quickly gaining popularity in Ghana, its art that can be hung, wore or used to decorate.

Also in the show, STUDIO 53’s Mapumba travels to Durban in South Africa to Boyzie Cekwana, co-founder of the Soweto Dance Theatre. When he founded the theatre at the tender age of 18, he knew this was what he wanted to do with his life.
Today he is one of the most sought after dancers and choreographers in South Africa and regularly travels around the world conducting dance workshops.

Next Rosie takes DStv audiences on a trip to Mozambique’s Pemba resort, where only the tides tell time… Touch down on the coast of Pemba and it won’t take long to realize you’ve landed somewhere very special. Untouched beaches and the warm waves of the Indian Ocean invite you to relax and unwind while you soak up the sun. But it won’t be long before the sounds of the sea draws you back to the beach. Here days start and end with the movement of the sun and months are clocked by the changing of the seasons.

Lastly STUDIO 53’s Gaetano attends the Jazz festival in Uganda. The sizzling Jazz Safari is an effort to promote jazz in Uganda, determined not to miss a thing, Gaetano made sure he got some one-on-one time before the show with a couple of the evening’s star performers. Open air jazz concerts like this are held once a month here, at Ange Noir. Uganda’s jazz artists got the audience warmed up and showed off their talent. But the evening’s headliner, Saxophonist Eric Marienthal, stole the show.

DStv audiences in East and West Africa can watch STUDIO 53 on M-NET on Thursday January 29 at 19:30 CAT and on M-Net Series on Saturday January 31 at 18:00 CAT.
