Mim Suleiman is not a stranger to Zanzibar. She was born on the island and lived in Shangani ( Stone Town) for most of her childhood, where she attended Tumekuja School. Mim appeared on TVZ in children's programmes back in the late 70s and early 80s, but soon after her family moved toUK .
Fast forward to the new millennium and one day Mim Suleiman starts hearing streams of voices, rhythm and poetry coming out of herself whilst working as a technical teacher of metallurgy at the University of Birmingham (UK). With no musical background whatsoever, Mim Suleiman left her job to pursue her dream.
Soulful, soaring, deep, and divine, Mim's presence and music is a blessing.
She has been described as a fiery singer who never fails to indulge her audience! She revels in her East African singing and percussion traditions, is a versatile vocalist and vibrant performer.
"Think of Miriam Makeba meets Aretha Franklin.... Mim's show-stopping performance is talk of the town" (Dave Jarvis)
Mim Suleiman has played from Europe to Asia, but ironically rarely inAfrica. Her music ranges from soul, blues, funk, house, jazz, rock and dance tracks, to her African heritage. She writes in English and Kiswahili (her native tongue) and sings in a variety of languages including Fula.
Mim's reputation is growing fast. She recently worked with Justin Adams and Juldeh Camarah on their "Tell No Lies" album. In 2009 she also performed at Glastonbury and WOMAD festivals (UK ) as well as led workshops. A small lady with a big voice, with her own rhythms and dance moves she is also gifted with a charismatic and ecstatic personality.
"I grew up seeing Bi Kidude drumming in the streets for weddings etc. My dream is to find the legend and learn and record with her"
