SuperSport will broadcast over 20 World Cup qualifying matches in the next week, highlighted by Saturday’s vital Mozambique-Nigeria match, Argentina’s desperate race to make it to South Africa in 2010 and the Russian-German crunch game.
Nigeria must beat Mozambique in Abuja on Saturday to have any hope of reaching their first finals since 2002. Anything but victory, coupled with an expected triumph for Tunisia over Kenya in Rades, and the Super Eagles will miss out on their second finals in succession.
Saturday’s other big match sees Germany face a daunting trip to Moscow. The Germans currently lead qualifying Group 4 by one point from Guus Hiddink's side and a win at the Luzhniki Stadium will see them confirm their place in South Africa. Defeat and they will almost certainly have to steer through the lottery of the play-offs, where the likes of Portugal, Greece and France could await.
The Portuguese have some work to do in Group 1 to reach those play-offs, however, starting with a desperately needed win over Hungary in Lisbon. They will also be hoping Denmark will beat second-placed Sweden, which will seal the Danes spot at the World Cup, but leave the Portuguese favourites to finish as runners-up.
It is do-or-die time for Argentina when they host Peru in Buenos Aires on Saturday. Diego Maradona's struggling stars currently occupy fifth-place in South American qualifying. Should they remain there, this would mean a play-off against the fourth-placed side in the North, Central America and Caribbean region.
However, the problem for the Argentines is the form of the sides just behind them, with Uruguay, Venezuela and Colombia all within two points. Any slip-ups at home to minnows Peru and it will in all likelihood be tickets for Maradona and his South African dream.
Still in South America, Ecuador can book a third-successive appearance at the World Cup finals if they beat Uruguay at home and Argentina fail to get full points from Peru. Sixto Vizuete's side started qualifying in horrific fashion with a 1-0 home loss to Venezuela, a 5-0 hammering from Brazil and another 5-1 thumping from Paraguay, but have arguably been one of the form sides since then, losing just once in 13 matches and completing one of the great achievements in football, beating Bolivia in the altitude of La Paz.
