Jose Mourinho has labelled it bigger than the World Cup, but while the Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho may be stretching the point a bit too far, it is fair to say the Champions League final is a huge game of football.
On Saturday at 20:45 CAT, Mourinho’s Inter Milan will take on Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabau Stadium in Madrid to win what is correctly considered the most prestigious prize in club football, the European Champions League. And you can follow every minute of it on your World of Champions, SuperSport on SuperSport 3.
Inter are chasing their first title since 1965 and their second overall, while Bayern Munich, who have won the Champions League three times, are looking for their fourth title and their first since winning in 2001 with former Ghana defender Samuel Kufuor in the side.
There will be a lot of African interest in Saturday’s final too with history beckoning all over. Three-time African player of the year Samuel Eto’o won the Champions League twice with Barcelona, in 2006 and 2009, scoring in both finals and will be seeking to become the first African to do so three times, with Inter. If he scores in the final he will become the only player to have scored in three different Champions League finals.
Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari is also looking to become the third Ghanaian winner of the Champions League and join an elite group that includes Abedi Pele and Samuel Osei Kufuor.
And in Kenya, they will be cheering on McDonald Mariga, the first Kenyan to have played in the Champions League.
