ESPN Films have teamed up with Oscar-nominated director Spike Lee to produce a unique 90 minute documentary which follows a day in the life of the NBA 2008 Most Valuable Player, Kobe Bryant. Kobe Doin’ Work will premiere on DStv channel 230 on May 21 at 20:00 CAT.
Kobe Doin’ Work takes an unprecedented look at the Los Angeles Lakers superstar, while also showcasing legendary director Spike Lee’s fervent love of basketball. The result is a definitive portrait of one of the sport’s greatest athletes.
During last year’s NBA playoffs, Lee and his cinematographer, Matthew Libatique, spent the day with Bryant, with unlimited access to him before, during and after the game. Using 30 cameras, as the Lakers battled the San Antonio Spurs in a game which would decide who would make it to the NBA Playoff Finals, Lee tracked the player’s every move. Through pre-game prep, fast breaks, team huddles and post-game interviews, it's just another day at the office for Bryant but is a thrilling experience for the viewer.
The documentary was shot last year in April towards the end of the season when the hopes of L.A were placed upon one game that would decide whether or not the Lakers would represent the Western conference or not.
In the nationally televised game, the Lakers would attempt to strip the World Champions, San Antonio Spurs, of their title. Bryant was mic’d, and former coach Phil Jackson agreed for Spike Lee’s production team entrance to the sacred locker room to shoot pre-game footage as well as half-time and after the game “so it was a very-very intimate look at the guy who turned out to be MVP from the last season” says Lee.
Lee goes on to mention that “It was a lot of planning even though it takes place over a one-day shoot. But the thing about something like this, it’s not scripted. Kobe scored 20 points that game. Of course, we would have liked him to score 61 like he did against the Knicks. That’s the great thing about sports, you can’t determine that stuff. You’re really rolling the dice when you do that stuff.”
Basketball fanatics will be glued to their seats for 90 minutes of adrenalin when Kobe Bryant shows the antics that made him MVP yet again . . . on DStv.
