RECOGNIZING the importance of the project “the Roads to Independence in Africa: the African Liberation Heritage Programme” that seek to celebrate Africa’s recent past in which Africans were main actors of their liberation and achieved their freedom through struggle and sacrifice;
ACKNOWLEDGING that the project’s major components include the construction of a museum, library and archives and aims at recognizing the spirit of solidarity and cooperation amongst Africans in the context of the libration movements;
RECOGNIZING further that the importance of liberation movements to the process of decolonization of the continent as well as the role played by Tanzania and other independent African countries in providing material and moral support to the liberation movements which led to the struggle for independence in Southern Africa.
THEREFORE, the Heads of Political Parties of Former Liberation Movements of Southern Africa met in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on 5th May 2010 under the Chairmanship of Comrade President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the Chairman of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). The following Heads of Political Parties attended:
· Comrade President Robert G. Mugabe, President and First Secretary General of ZAN-PF
· Comrade President Armando Guebuza, President of FRELIMO
· Comrade President Jacob Zuma, President of ANC
· Comrade President Hifikepunye Pohamba, President of SWAPO Party
Comrade President Jose Eduard Dos Santos, Presidents of MPLA could not attend and his apology was acknowledged.
The heads of Political Parties met specifically to discuss the writing of the above-mentioned history of the liberation struggle and preservation of historical sites connected to the liberation struggle. In this vein, the Heads of Political Parties resolved to do the following:
· For Sister Parties to take an active role in documenting the proper historical perspective of their liberation struggles.
· For identification, restoration and preservation of historical sites which are relevant to the liberation struggles.
· To collaborate with the AU and UNESCO on the establishment of the African Liberation Heritage and get the project approved by the Summit of the AU.
Finally, the Heads of Political Parties renewed their commitment to the spirit of the liberation struggle and the improvement of the living conditions of the people’s of the Region.
